How to convert Webcam to an IP Camera :
Most of the peoples who are familiar with video surveillance system are using IP camera or dedicated Digital Video Recording system. Those dedicate system are working well but it’s also costly.
The main facility of an IP camera is you can monitor this camera from anywhere through internet. Even if you don’t have Real IP in your IP camera but you have still chance to get view from camera using Router port forwarding. An IP camera is costly device. But you can resolve this problem partially when you can able to turn your web camera as an IP camera.
The advantage of using web camera as an IP camera Web camera is cost effective than an IP camera. High resolution and great image quality. Small device, you can place it in any suitable place. Wall mount, ceiling mount, table/monitor mount facilities available in web cam.
Disadvantage A PC/Laptop with essential software also needs to run to with this web camera. No wifi facility will directly available for this camera. That mean you web camera attach with your computer with a USB cable but working as an IP camera. This is available to view from a web browser. How to convert webcam to an IP camera:
You can turn your web cam to an IP camera within a few minute. Follow the below steps and convert your USB webcam to an IP camera. Step1: At first you to need install latest version of Java in your computer. You can free download Java from here: http://j.gs/1tQU Step2: Download and install YAWCAM software in your computer. You can free download this software from here: http://j.gs/1tQV Once installed, the Yawcam software icon will be placed in your desktop. Double click this icon, the Yamcam control panel will appear. Now you have to choose which mode you want to enable to get your IP camera preview. I recommend using stream. Because I’m used it myself and found nicely working from my end.
So click enable stream and then go to settings>edit settings. Focus on stream option. Port information is given there, by default it is “8081”. Copy this port number or remember. Make sure this software can detect your proper camera. To check camera settings click on settings>device. After make sure your camera is detected successfully. Now open a web browser and type you computer IP (which is you automatically get from a router or manually input in your LAN card) with the port number (8081) and press Enter. Example: http://192.168.1.6:8081 Now you can get a camera view in your web browser. Rotate your camera around and make sure the streaming is working properly. Now the question is how getting this camera view from outside of your network? Because now you can able to view this camera with your private IP. You’re private IP working only inside of your Local Area Network. But if you want to make it World Wide (internet) then you need to have a real IP in your router WAN (internet) side. Also you need to do port forwarding on your router. Port forwarding option availability depends on your router brand and model. But good news is maximum modern routers are support port forwarding. For an example below I’m described how to do port forward in Netgear router.
Port forwarding on Netgear Router: Login your router. Go to Port forwarding/Port triggering option from the right side menu options. Select Port Forwarding and Click “Add Custom Service” Type a Service Name. Example:- webcam Starting Port: 8081 Ending Port: 8081 Service IP Address: Type the computer IP address where the webcam will be connected. Click> Apply. Now browse you real IP with the port address. Example: http://123.49.58.2:8081 You will get a view of your webcam from world wide of internet.
